GEAR UP stands for Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs

While activities vary by site, the program combines academic support with early college awareness activities in some of the Commonwealth’s highest-poverty schools. The program enrolls both cohorts and other low-income “priority” students.

To help youth prepare for college and beyond, GEAR UP Massachusetts served 6,382 middle and high school students in 2009.  Funded by the U.S. Department of Education with a state match, GEAR UP Massachusetts operates in 16 schools in seven cities—Boston, Holyoke, Lawrence, Lowell, New Bedford, Springfield, and Worcester.  Institutional partnerships GEAR UP programs also exist in Fitchburg and Lowell.
